Mark A. Uhlig

Chief Executive Officer


A native of Wichita, Kan., Mr. Uhlig graduated from Princeton University, where he received A.B. and M.P.A. degrees from the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs. He also received a J.D. with honors from Harvard Law School.


After serving as an editor of Foreign Affairs magazine from 1981 to 1985, Mr. Uhlig served as an editor and correspondent for The New York Times, and as chief of the Times’ bureaus in Mexico City and Managua, Nicaragua. He has served as the company’s chief executive officer since its inception.


Mr. Uhlig lives in Kansas City with his wife, bestselling author Candice Millard, and their three children.

Born in Dublin, Mr. Tinsley received a B.A. in Economics from Cambridge University and an M.B.A. from the Stanford University Graduate School of Business. A Qualified Accountant, Mr. Tinsley worked for four years as a Manager at Price Waterhouse in London, before joining the international consulting firm McKinsey & Company in 1976.


At McKinsey, Mr. Tinsley advised a wide range of multinational clients, and served as head of the firm’s European healthcare practice. He was also a member of the firm’s governing Shareholders Council, and served as head of the firm’s worldwide post-merger management practice, advising major international companies in industries including pharmaceuticals, chemicals and mining.


Mr. Tinsley lives in London and in County Mayo, Ireland, with his wife, Susan, and their three children.

In no area has the company benefited from greater intellectual talent than in its medical division, where all medical content is reviewed by a distinguished board of more than 30 scientific experts under the leadership of the company’s medical editor-in-chief, Dr. Charles Balch.


A world-renowned pioneer in cancer research and treatment, Dr. Balch is the author of more than 700 scientific publications, and has lectured in 32 countries and most major academic centers in the United States. Currently Professor of Surgery at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, Dr. Balch has held many major leadership roles during his 35-year career, serving as President and CEO of the City of Hope National Medical Center; Head of the Division of Surgery at the University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center; Professor of Surgery and Director of the Johns Hopkins Clinical Research Network; Executive Vice President and Chief Executive Officer of the American Society of Clinical Oncology; and President of the Society of Surgical Oncology.


Recognized as one of the leading melanoma experts in the world, Dr. Balch is the editor of Cutaneous Melanoma, regarded as the authoritative textbook on melanoma, now in its fifth edition. He is also the founding Editor-in-Chief of the Annals of Surgical Oncology, the leading journal in the world in its field, with over 10,000 surgical and library subscribers.


A native of Toledo, Ohio, Dr. Balch received his B.A. with honors from the University of Toledo, and his M.D. from the Columbia College of Physicians & Surgeons. He was also awarded a Ph.D. (honoris causa) by the University of Crete. He currently lives in Fort Worth, Texas, with his wife, Carol.
